Types of Laser Hair Removal (Diode, Alexandrite, etc.)

The laser hair removal is used to permanently eliminate body hair. It can be used for the mustache, chin hairs, as well as for the bikini area, legs, buttocks, and the entire body.

Often, it is identified based on whether it is focused on women or men, in which case it is called women’s hair removal or men’s laser hair removal, although in practice, it is the same treatment to remove hair, with the same price per session, although the number of sessions will vary depending on hair density and thickness. The only difference between “women’s” and “men’s” is the number of sessions required, but the machines or devices are the same.

It can be performed on practically any part of the body, including sensitive and intimate areas such as the bikini line, armpits, buttocks, and the area known as the intergluteal and perianal areas.

This hair removal method is suitable for areas where hair grows. It is most commonly used for full leg hair removal in women and for back hair removal in men.

Currently, different types of hair removal machines can be used. You have probably heard of Soprano, Alexandrite, Diode… each of these has its advantages and characteristics, and since Mismumi wants you to have a clear understanding of all treatments before undergoing them, this article will explain the differences between them.

Types of laser hair removal and hair removal machines

Types of Laser Hair Removal

Since lasers have been used for permanent hair removal with very good results for a few years now, there are several models of hair removal machines, many of which are designed for both men and women.

The devices that remove hair permanently are becoming better. The sessions cause less pain, and the treatment can be done much faster, increasing its effectiveness.

Thus, below we indicate the different types of laser hair removal so you can choose the one that best suits you:

In addition to improving the destruction of the hair follicle where hair grows, they also enhance quality when used on different hair and skin tones, allowing the same machine to be used on various skin types (light, dark, and tanned) and different types of body hair (light, dark, fine, and coarse).

Below, we briefly explain each of the hair removal methods, and if you have any questions about one of them, we recommend reading the article about each type of laser hair removal as they are very well explained.

Advantages and disadvantages of hair removal machines

Diode Laser

Laser hair removal machineDesigned for people with dark or tanned skin, the Diode Laser is ideal.

If your skin type falls between 4 and 6 (dark skin), this hair removal method is suitable.

On the other hand, people with white or very light skin should choose one of the other types of lasers mentioned below.

Soprano Laser

Laser Soprano XL

In reality, it is a type of diode laser but given this name because it is much more modern than the earlier versions.

The Soprano Laser is permanent and improves results in eliminating body hair compared to older machines, many of which are now outdated.

It works well with all skin types and hair thicknesses, even with tanned skin.

The Soprano Laser has the advantage of causing less pain, or at least significantly less than other lasers used for hair removal.

Its performance surpasses others, making it suitable for any type of body hair.

However, since it has advanced a lot, there are also many versions of the same device, with some differences between Soprano XL and Ice lasers that you may find interesting if you are considering hair removal for your legs or other areas of your body.

Soprano improves the removal of light hair on dark skin. Its response to skin melanin is much more precise thanks to the latest-generation diode technology. It heats the hair to 45ºC to weaken it and prevent its growth.

The disadvantage of Soprano hair removal is that it does not work as well with gray or very fine hair.

Lightsheer Laser

Lightsheer laser hair removal

It is another variation of the Soprano laser and is one of the newest hair removal methods.

The Lightsheer Laser, sometimes called “E Light“, has the advantage of having a larger applicator, which is appreciated if you are going to remove hair from large areas like the legs or back.

Since it has a larger tip than other machines, it makes the session easier, potentially completing it in less time. It covers a much larger area of the body where hair is present and, being state-of-the-art, produces less pain. This is because it also transmits less heat.

When using the Lightsheer Laser, you won’t need anesthetic cream!

Alexandrite Laser

Alejandrita Q Switched

Recommended for light skin, below phototype 4, meaning if the diode laser cannot effectively destroy the hair due to the color of your skin, you should opt for Alexandrite Laser Hair Removal.

The machine used is less sensitive to dark colors, so when it emits energy, it does not effectively heat the hair root when there is a high concentration of skin melanin. This is something to keep in mind if, despite having light skin, you like to sunbathe in the summer. It should not be used on tanned skin.

The Alexandrite Laser is effective for fine and soft hair. This hair removal method works better on very light skin. If your skin tone is very light, it is the best option for you. The lighter the skin, the better the results.

The disadvantage of Alexandrite is that it can cause hyperpigmentation and the appearance of skin spots, which can be mitigated by using modern devices.

Additionally, it can cause more pain during hair removal, even more than IPL photoepilation.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Hair Removal

Photoepilation vs Laser

Although this treatment is often considered part of laser hair removal, it is actually photoepilation, one of the most efficient alternatives for permanent hair removal.

Photoepilation or IPL photoepilation works with high-intensity light pulses.

Its results are very good, nearly identical to those produced by lasers.

The advantages of IPL include its ability to adjust the wavelength, making it very easy to adapt to different skin types, as well as to thick, fine, dark, and light hair. IPL works well for blonde and red hair.

The disadvantages of photoepilation are that it works better on people with dark hair and light skin. While it can be used on other skin tones, it is ideal for light skin. Best for non-tanned skin.

You probably already know what it is and how it works, but as some people may not be familiar with it or not in depth, and are considering trying it, we will address some common questions about this method of hair removal.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal machine

It is a treatment to permanently remove body hair. Laser hair removal is one of the best methods available for hair removal.

Unlike hot wax, electrolysis, and pull-off methods, laser hair removal works by increasing the temperature of the hair follicle to disable it and prevent it from producing keratin for new hair growth.

Instead of pulling out the hair and waiting for it to grow back, the laser burns the root, the hair bulb, causing its death. Therefore, it is a permanent method.

But don’t be alarmed by the fact that it destroys the hair root as it usually has no side effects and very few contraindications, which we will explain later.

Laser technology allows for almost all body hair to disappear in just a few sessions.

Depending on the thickness, amount, and color of the hair, you may need 5, 10, or 12 sessions. Men, for example, typically need more sessions than women because their hair grows much thicker and in greater quantity.

Each person requires a different number of sessions due to their individual hair characteristics. However, most people can enjoy permanent hair removal with 5 to 10 sessions.

How to Choose the Right Laser Hair Removal?

You should avoid relying on the advice of friends and acquaintances and evaluate the skin and hair characteristics of each individual. What works well for one person with Alexandrite may not be as effective for another, who might find diode laser hair removal more useful. In some cases, due to skin quality and hair type, photoepilation might be recommended. The key is to assess the skin type and hair color and choose the appropriate hair removal method based on these characteristics.

If you don’t know your skin type, check the following image:

Human Skin Phototypes

This chart is used for various purposes such as beauty treatments, including laser hair removal.

The range of skin types goes from 1 to 6 and includes Caucasian, Asian, and Black individuals. It covers very light, light, and dark skin tones.

Which Laser Hair Removal is Better, Diode or Alexandrite?

Diodo vs Alexandrite Laser Hair Removal

The Alexandrite laser has the limitation of being suitable for light skin. It does not work as well on dark and tanned skin.

If you have tanned in recent weeks, you will not be able to use it, and if you do go to your hair removal session, the benefits will be reduced.

Melanin in the hair attracts the light emitted by the laser in the form of heat. All the power of the device should be directed at the hair, but the dark skin tone causes it to dissipate, losing effectiveness and even potentially causing superficial burns as a side effect if used under these conditions.

If you have a skin type higher than IV, you should use a diode laser.

If you are between type 3 and 4, it is best to be evaluated directly at the aesthetic center and make a decision, as comparing tones with an image is not the same as seeing it in person.

If you have dark or tanned skin (skin types 4 to 6), the diode laser will be perfect. It emits less intensity and reacts less with the skin and hair melanin. This makes it much safer for people with very dark or black skin.

If you are a man, the diode laser is also suitable for you. It is widely used in men’s hair removal since men’s hair is darker and thicker.

Advantages of Laser Hair Removal

Advantages of Laser Hair Removal

  • No pulling during hair removal.
  • No pinching.
  • It is painless or causes minimal discomfort compared to electric epilators.
  • Prevents ingrown hairs and boils.
  • You are always hair-free and do not need to buy replacements.
  • In the long run, it is much cheaper.

One of the greatest advantages of laser hair removal is staying groomed without the inconvenience of using a razor in a hurry. Once you have undergone the treatment, you can forget about wax and confidently show off your legs at any occasion, without worrying about a bushy patch in the bikini area or armpits.

Your skin will be smooth, firm, and beautiful, and you will never experience irritation after hair removal again, as it will no longer be needed.

Disadvantages of Laser Hair Removal

Side Effects and Contraindications of Laser Hair Removal

  • Skin discoloration may occur.
  • The cost of the treatment is high, though it is offset by the time saved and the money invested in hair removal products.
  • Some people experience burning or heat during the session.
  • Hormonal changes can activate dormant hair follicles, so you may need one or two booster sessions after a few months.
  • Burns on the skin may occur.

Regarding burns, it is uncommon if the machine is in good condition and used according to recommended times. However, there is always a risk, no matter how minimal.

Another downside is the upfront cost of laser hair removal, which is why there are packages and ongoing offers. Some centers also allow payment in installments, so you can pay for the treatment as you undergo it.

As for the question of whether laser hair removal is painful… it is nothing compared to the pain of pulling off hardened wax. Waxing can be very painful when you have a lot of hair, especially in the bikini area and armpits.

But we won’t deceive you—some people are more sensitive to pain and may feel significant discomfort when the laser is applied. These cases are rare, but yes, laser hair removal can be painful in certain situations. It depends on pain tolerance and the type of machine used. Sometimes, anesthetic cream can be applied, but always check with the center to ensure it can be used with the specific equipment.

Laser Hair Removal for Men

As mentioned earlier, male laser hair removal is as effective as female laser hair removal.

If you are a man, you can enjoy all the benefits and comforts of a hair-free body.

Both men with a lot of hair on their back and those who only have it on their legs can access this treatment.

Male laser hair removal is suitable for everyone. You can treat legs, buttocks, abdomen, chest, back, and even reduce beard density…

Just like with female hair removal, you only need to choose the right treatment for you.

Upper Lip Hair Removal

Hair removal of the mustache or upper lip

This is another common concern, as some women have a lot of hair on their upper lip.

Laser hair removal for the upper lip is fantastic. It eliminates the need for tweezers or other methods like depilatory creams. The result is very aesthetic, leaving the skin smooth permanently.

Removing upper lip hair with laser requires several sessions. These can be spread over months or even years, depending on whether the hair regrows or not.

Since the upper lip is a very sensitive area to hormonal changes, you might notice increased hair growth with age. Generally, women start needing this treatment from around 40 years old, especially with menopause, though some of us have a fine layer of hair from a young age.

Don’t hesitate to remove unsightly upper lip hair. There is a noticeable difference before and after.

Laser Hair Removal for Eyebrows

Another common question is whether it is possible to undergo laser hair removal on the eyebrows. The answer is yes, it is indeed possible to use laser hair removal for the eyebrows.

This technique is often used by both men and women with thick eyebrows. The area between the eyebrows can look particularly unattractive when it has hair. It can significantly affect the appearance of your eyes.

However, care must be taken as this is a highly sensitive area. Protective eyewear is essential to avoid eye injuries. It is also important to avoid the lower part of the eyebrow. The laser is suitable for the space between the eyebrows and, if your eyebrows are very thick and you wish to shape them on the upper and lower parts, electrical hair removal may be a better option.

It is crucial that a laser specialist performs this procedure to prevent damage to the macula and retina. Even a slight burn can irreparably damage your vision. Therefore, extreme caution should be exercised in this area. Never use home laser devices for this purpose.

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

As mentioned earlier, laser hair removal can be painful for some people, depending on your sensitivity, hair type, skin type, and the machine used.

To minimize pain and burning sensations, an anesthetic gel can be used before the session. This numbs the skin and makes the procedure more comfortable. However, make sure to discuss this with your laser clinic, as there may be limitations based on the type of session you are receiving.

Pain occurs because hair follicles are surrounded by nerve endings that are very sensitive to manipulation. You can feel this when you pull out a hair with tweezers. Hair follicles transmit sensations from the skin, and when you undergo hair removal, you target the follicle or root of the hair, thus sending a nerve impulse indicating that something is happening.

In many cases, the procedure is painless. People with darker skin may experience more discomfort compared to those with lighter skin.

Preventing Skin Discoloration with Laser

To prevent skin discoloration caused by hyperpigmentation from the laser, it is best to avoid sun exposure 15 days before and 15 days after the treatment. This allows the skin to recover from the session and prevents the aggregation of melanin, which causes skin spots.

Another crucial factor in avoiding side effects from laser hair removal is choosing the right machine for your skin type and hair characteristics. When chosen correctly, there should be no issues. Melanin response improves, and the formation and aggregation of skin pigments, which protect against burns, are avoided.

Hyperpigmentation from the laser is the body’s response to prevent damage when the skin receives too much energy. This can occur if too much power is used due to incorrect selection of the hair removal method.

Laser Hair Removal Prices

The most common question is about the cost of laser hair removal. To give you an idea, here are the typical prices for laser hair removal by body area where you want to permanently remove hair. Keep in mind that prices can vary depending on the center you choose.

Hello, today I had my first session with a laser that I was told is deeper than the diode laser. They also told me that I wouldn’t see any changes until the third or fourth session, which are scheduled every 4 weeks. What do you think about that?

  2. Vanesa says:

Good afternoon, today I had laser treatment on my unibrow, and they burned a part of my eyebrow. My question is if the hair will grow back. How long will it take to grow? Thanks.

    • Marta Lerinde says:

If it only happened once, it might grow back. It will take a few weeks.

  3. Aitor says:

Good afternoon, I’m very curious about something. At a center where a friend of mine gets hair removal, they claim to use hybrid equipment that emits both energies simultaneously in the same pulse, meaning IPL + laser at the same time. Is this possible? Is it trustworthy?

  4. carlota capurro says:

Hi, I’d like to know if it’s possible to get hair removal with a titanium spinal prosthesis?

    • Marta Lerinde says:

Hi Carlota, in principle, titanium prostheses are a contraindication for laser hair removal. The energy emitted can heat the material, so it’s not advisable.

  5. Daniela says:

I’ve had several laser sessions, and they haven’t had any effect. Is that normal?

    • Marta Lerinde says:

Hi Daniela, you should notice less hair growth from the first session. If you have a lot of hair or if it is very strong, it might take a few more sessions than it does for others, but you should see some improvement if everything is going well.

  6. Maria says:

Hello, I wanted to ask, I am now 34 years old and since around 20 I’ve always shaved my legs, bikini area, and underarms with a razor. As a result, I have thick, dark hair and a lot of it, and it grows back quickly after shaving. That’s why I want to try some form of permanent hair removal that is really effective. I have a normal skin tone, more tanned than fair. Given these characteristics, which type of laser would be good for me? Or maybe IPL? Could you give me some advice? I’ve read so much and I’m confused… Thanks!

    • Marta Lerinde says:

ou can try IPL or a type like Soprano, which works better for darker skin. Alexandrite laser is more recommended for fair skin.

  7. Maria says:

If it only happens once, it might grow back. It will take a few weeks. Thank you.
